During the Spanish manager’s first summer window, he requested the London giants add David Raya to replace Emiliano Martinez. However, when Brentford quoted a high price for the 26-year-old shot-stopper, Arsenal responded with the underwhelming signing of Runar Alex Runarsson.
The Gunners reportedly tried again this summer, although the Bees raised the asking price after their promotion to the PL. On the opening day of the new campaign, David precisely showed Mikel Arteta what he missed out on with an impressive display, keeping a clean sheet in the process.
The Gunners did rectify their issues by signing Aaron Ramsdale and have found a proper solution and competition for Bernd Leno. With the German goalkeeper expected to leave next summer or in winter, Arsenal are expected to retain an interest in Raya.
As things stand, the Spanish goalkeeper’s fantastic displays will keep attracting the interest of top teams from the next window onwards, including that of the Gunners, who will have to replace Bernd Leno.
However, with Aaron Ramsdale now cementing his position as Arsenal’s undisputed no.1, it is hard to see the Spanish tactician bring in another potential first-choice goalkeeper. Everton showed interest in David but opted to sign Asmir Begovic on a free transfer to provide backup to Jordan Pickford.
Meanwhile, David and his Brentford teammates have taken the PL by storm, showing the confidence rarely seen recently in a newly-promoted side.
