Arsenal given green light to sign 22-year-old Ligue 1 midfielder

Lyon attacker Houssem Aouar will wait to see if interest from Real Madrid or Barcelona materializes into a firm offer this summer before making a final decision on a move to the London giants.

France international was the source of intense interest from Arsenal last summer but Gunners’ offer of nearly £31m was rejected by the Les Gones, who were seeking closer to £55m.

Houssem was keen on leaving Ligue 1 giants but he was ‘surprised’ by the lack of concrete interest from the Gunners, who were well-positioned to sign the playmaker given the financial effect of the pandemic on many top teams around Europe last summer.

Aouar is not ruling out a move to London club this summer but he will first wait to see if the interest in his services is greater at the end of the campaign compared to last.

Blaugrana and Los Blancos have both heavily scouted the 22-year-old midfielder in the last 18 months and he is keen to see if the La Liga giants front up to their interest with a firm offer at the end of the campaign.

Though the French midfielder will have two years left on his deal by the summer, Lyon are likely to demand the same fee for the footballer in the summer as the level of interest in him is likely to be greater this time around.

Ligue 1 giants are unwilling to allow the playmaker to leave this month and Gunners are not in a position to meet the asking price on demand from the Ligue 1 giants. Arsenal recently took advantage of a government loan scheme to avoid a cash flow problem and the £120m has to be paid back this summer.
