Arsenal given green light to sign 26-year-old Spanish left-back

Arsenal are ready to accelerate the signing of Alex Grimaldo. The Gunners are expected to make a €7m offer which Benfica may consider as the defender has only one year left on his contract. After over six years in Portugal, the 26-year-old defender is keen to take the next step in his career, and the Gunners are showing serious interest.

Grimaldo has less than one year left on his contract with Benfica, which may force the Primeira Liga club to consider a cut-price offer. A €7m bid is expected from Arsenal in the coming days. Alejandro had a good 2021/22 campaign with the Eagles and is regarded as one of their best performers.

However, the Spaniard has refused to extend his contract with the Primeira Liga giants, which has seen the Gunners consider making a move. The Primeira Liga giants originally wanted over €7.5m, but with the Spanish left-back’s contractual situation, they could consider the €7m offer from the Gunners.

Grimaldo stays eager to prove himself in another top league and could see  England as the best place to further his career. If Arsenal add Alejandro, Tavares could be allowed to leave on loan, with the likes of Marseille, Atalanta and Real Sociedad vying for his signature.

Alex would provide solid competition to Tierney in the left-back position. The Spanish coach had wanted Lisandro Martinez to take up such a role in the squad. The Argentine defender is proficient as a centre-back and at left-back.
