Arsenal have seen £30m bid for defensive midfielder turned down

Mainz have rejected a £31 million bid from Arsenal for star midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin. The Gunners were previously linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international by French publication RMC back in June.

North London giants new head coach Unai Emery is reportedly a big fan of the tenacious defensive midfielder. Jean-Philippe Gbamin started 29 of Mainz’s 34 Bundesliga matches last season, earning rave reviews for his commanding displays.

The 22-year-old has three years left on his current contract with the German club. And Bild is reporting that while a £31 million bid was received from an English club, they cannot reveal which one. Regardless, Mainz director Rouven Schroder insists Gbamin is not for sale.

“Jean-Philippe is not on the market,” he assured. “We too have some pretensions, and he’s a big part of our plans for the new season. There’s no ifs and buts!”

The Gunners have already signed two midfielders this summer in the form of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

Meanwhile Arsenal could miss out on Unai Emery’s top summer target Steven N’Zonzi who is getting closer to join AS Roma this transfer window.
