Arsenal held negotiations with 23-year-old Ligue 1 midfielder

The London giants look to be keeping their options open in case they are unable to secure the services of James Maddison in the summer transfer window. To that end, Lille midfielder Renato Sanches as a possible alternative to the Leicester City attacker.

Portugal international has resurrected his career since joining Lille from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2019. While not a regular starter for Lille, Sanches has still managed to make his mark for Les Dogues while regaining his place in the Portuguese national side.

To date, Renato has played 59 games for Les Dogues while also chipping in with five goals and as many assists along the way. His progress over the last couple of years has not gone unnoticed, with several teams showing a keenness to secure his services. The 23-year-old midfielder is now being linked with a move to the London club.

Arsenal have already strengthened their midfield unit this summer by signing Albert Sambi Lokonga. However, despite the arrival of Belgium international, the Gunners are still in desperate need to sign a midfielder, and for good reason, with Dani Ceballos not returning for a third time after completing a loan spell with the club.

With Granit Xhaka possibly on the exit trail and likely to join Roma, it becomes imperative that the Gunners bring in another midfielder. To that end, the Gunners have shown an inclination to boost their creative ranks by signing an attacker, with James Maddison as one of their key targets.

However, the pursuit of James Maddison is a tad bit complicated due to his excessive asking price, which is why the Gunners have now turned their attention towards the Portuguese midfielder.
