The London giants are in the market for Douglas Luiz. The Aston Villa star has emerged as the latest footballer to have been identified as a target for Arsenal, as the Spanish coach continues his search for a defensive midfielder this winter.
It appears Mikel Arteta is wary of his club’s lack of depth in midfield, especially with Partey set to join the Ghanaian camp for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. It leaves the Spanish manager devoid of options in the middle of the park, with Xhaka and Sambi Lokonga the only two candidates competing for the two places.
Other options include Elneny and Maitland-Niles. But Elneny is facing an uncertain future at the club amid interest from Newcastle United, whereas Maitland-Niles is closing in on a winter move to Roma.
As a result, the Gunners have set their sights on Brazil international, who has enjoyed a healthy spell at Aston Villa since joining the club in 2019. The 23-year-old midfielder has notched up almost 100 competitive games for Aston Villa, impressing the onlookers with his work ethic and the ability to read the game.
Luiz’s fortunes have not changed under new manager Steven Gerrard, although the ex-Rangers coach has certainly employed the midfielder in a slightly more attacking role.
His partnership with McGinn has indeed played a key role behind the Lions’ success over the past couple of years. And it appears the Gunners believe he can replicate the same level of success alongside Partey at Arsenal.
