Arsenal in pole position to sign 24-year-old Premier League midfielder

Douglas Luiz will join Arsenal should he leave Aston Villa on a free transfer next summer. Brazil international seemed to come close to moving to the London club on the final day of the most recent window. Reports claimed that Arsenal made a bid for Luiz.

Aston Villa meanwhile, set an asking price of £40m as the deadline loomed. The problem for the Spanish manager’s side was that Douglas’ deal with the Lions expires at the end of the current season. The question mark over his future, therefore, remains.

And Aston Villa will be left with a tricky decision in winter should the 24-year-old midfielder decide that he is not signing a new deal with them. If the South American midfielder is able to leave on a free transfer, a move to Arsenal is likely to be on the cards.

You can certainly understand why the Gunners backed away from meeting Aston Villa’s asking price on the final day of the summer. The Brazilian midfielder is an ‘unbelievable‘ talent with the potential to improve further. However, he is not yet the finished article.

And with that, the Gunners probably could not justify paying £40m for a player available on free in a year. Landing him for nothing, however, would have the potential to be an absolute masterstroke from Arsenal. The Brazilian has shown the kind of quality he possesses, with the Spanish manager’s men no less.
