Arsenal keep a close eye on 21-year-old English right-back

The London giants are interested in a move for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, who shone against Arsenal in their recent FA Cup defeat. Due to his contractual situation, the 21-year-old defender could only play for Arsenal next campaign if the Gunners are to make a transfer.

The Gunners have been on the hunt for a right-back with a different profile to those currently at Arsenal. The Spanish coach wants to continue his recruitment drive and bring in footballers with a long future ahead of them. Last summer, they signed six footballers under the age of 23, which indicates Arsenal’s new transfer policy.

They signed Tomiyasu late last summer, and the Japanese defender has been a revelation at Arsenal this campaign. The Asian defender plays is a defence-minded right-back, and despite his contributions in the attacking half, Mikel Arteta is looking for an alternative to bring in something different on the pitch.

There is no indication the Spanish manager wants to replace or push Takehiro Tomiyasu to the bench by signing a new footballer. In contrast, he wants someone that could add a new dimension to the club’s wing-play from the right-back position.

The idea of signing someone new has stemmed from Tavares’ success, who has competed well with Tierney for the left-back slot. The English defender has now emerged as a possible target for the Gunners. The right-back, currently playing for Nottingham Forest on loan, recently put in a solid performance with Arsenal in their FA Cup defeat.
