According to reports in Brazil, Arsenal have contacted with Gremio over the signing of Walter Kannemann, who was first linked with the Gunners at the start of the year, as Unai Emery tries to bolster his defensive options this transfer window.
Shkodran Mustafi is understood to be facing the axe and Globo Esporte claims the Premier League giants have been in touch with Gremio to sign Walter Kannemann.
The Emirates outfit have been tracking the 28-year-old for some time and Gremio value the centre-back at around £12 million.
That asking price should be feasible for the English giants, despite reports they have only £45 million to spend this window.
Unai Emery is hoping to raise further funds by selling some of his first-team players and Walter Kannemann could be a direct replacement for Shkodran Mustafi, were Arsenal to find a buyer for the German.
The Gunners though will face competition from domestic rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have also shown an interest in the defender.
Unai Emery has identified several options in defence, with Arsenal linked with Saint-Etienne’s William Saliba and Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti with the latest being the most expensive option for the London-based club but if somehow they striker a deal for the World Cup winner then, most of the problems in defence will be solved.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are locked in talks to secure the signature of Samuel Umtiti’s international teammate and the World Cup winner Nabil Fekir, who was close to signing for Liverpool last summer.
