Upamecano was named as a potential replacement for Laurent Koscielny in the summer – after the veteran, centre-back forced to transfer in Bordeaux – but Arsenal finally had to settle for David Luiz.
Unai Emery’s side reportedly only turned to Brazilian veteran after failing with a £55million suggestion for Upamecano, and the highly-promising starlet firmly on Arsenal manager’s radar.
Football Leaks reported last year Upamecano’s contract at Leipzig has a €100m release clause which reduces by €20m every year. Therefore, interested clubs would have had to pay €60m (£52m) to land French talent next summer.
Kicker claims that Leipzig are ready to allow on a lower fee for Upamecano to remove the risk of losing the starlet for free when his contract expires in 2021.
The Gunners have already shown that they are willing to stretch to £55m for the 20-year-old; they believe he has the potential to be the leader of their defence for the next years.
Though Leipzig had initially been keen to tie Upamecano down with a new long-term agreement, they are now resigned to losing the starlet.
Upamecano has his mindset on the move away from Bundesliga and would be prepared to force his way out of the club.
