The London giants are ramping up their efforts to sign a left-back capable of providing contest for Kieran Tierney. Kieran endured a difficult start to his Gunners career following his £25m transfer from Celtic 18 months ago but, having returned to full fitness, has emerged as a key component of the Spanish manager’s improving side.
Despite Tierney’s rapid progress and his increasing influence, Mikel Arteta is mindful of the fact his team lacks cover should one of his star players again succumb to the injury problems that have plagued his career. Kieran arrived at Arsenal still recovering from a hernia operation and also suffered a dislocated shoulder which ruled him out for a further six weeks the last campaign.
Arteta sanctioned the departure of Sead Kolasinac earlier this month and although both Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Cedric Soares are capable of playing at left-back, that position is not a natural fit for either footballer.
The Gunners have identified Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand as a possible summer signing and have also scouted Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell. England international has only six months remaining on his current deal and will assess his options in the summer.
Ryan still lives in London and may find it hard to resist the lure of Gunners should he fail to agree on a new deal with the Saints. Tyrick, meanwhile, has broken into Palace’s first team this campaign and gave Mikel Arteta a first-hand glimpse of his potential with a superb display in his side’s goalless draw against Arsenal earlier this month.
