Barcelona are very interested in joining Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and believe they will have a genuine chance of luring him to Camp Nou if Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions League.
The Gabon forward has once again been lethal in front of goal for the Gunners this campaign and leads their scoring charts with eight goals in 11 Premier League matches.
However, Arsenal have so far struggled to tie new club captain Aubameyang down to a new contract, with his current agreement expiring in 18 months’ time.
That has opened the door for Barcelona, with Spanish television show El Chiringuito claiming the Catalan side are looking at Aubameyang as a replacement for Luis Suarez.
Because of his current contract situation, Barca do not believe they will have to break the bank for Aubameyang, who would be free to leave for nothing in the summer of 2021.
There is also a suggestion that Aubameyang has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Arsenal if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.
Whether that is the case or not, Arsenal’s hierarchy have previously said that they will not allow players to run down their contracts any longer.
They were forced to hand a massive deal to Mesut Ozil when he entered the final year of his contract, traded Alexis Sanchez away and lost Aaron Ramsey to Juventus on a free transfer.
If both Aubameyang and fellow strike partner Alexandre Lacazette do not agree new contracts before the summer, Arsenal will have to consider cashing in while they still hold value.
Both players are reportedly wary of committing their futures to Arsenal while there is so much uncertainty surrounding manager Unai Emery’s future, with senior players harbouring a number of doubts about the Spaniard.
