Brighton have identified Liverpool defender Nat Phillips as a potential replacement for Arsenal-bound centre-back Ben White, with the Reds defender available at a fraction of the price they will receive for the Englishman.
Ben is on the verge of completing a £50m move to Arsenal from the Amex after the London club met Brighton’s hefty valuation of the English centre-back. The 23-year-old defender is to undergo a medical in north London and the move will be confirmed in the coming days.
Brighton manager Graham Potter wants to replace Ben as quickly as possible and Phillips has become a key target for Brighton. The 24-year-old defender will be available this summer for just £15m as he is surplus to requirements at Anfield since the arrival of Ibrahima Konate and the gradual return from the injury of Virgil, Gomez and Matip.
Nathaniel went from barely a fringe player to an integral figure at Anfield last campaign as he was drafted in to deal with the German manager’s injury crisis at centre-back.
He had never played in the PL before October 2020 but went on to play 17 league games, 15 of them starts, as he deputised for the injured trio of Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip.
The English centre-back also made three UCL starts, including home and away with Real Madrid, impressing against the Spanish side. While he has fallen back down the pecking order, he proved he is of PL quality and Brighton are keen to add him to their ranks and fill the void left by Ben White.
