Chelsea and Newcastle United have been told to fork out £25m to add Everton defender Lucas Digne in the ongoing transfer window. France international enjoyed a good start to life at Merseyside club since moving to Goodison Park from Barcelona in 2018. Digne has since played 127 games for Everton, scoring six goals and assisting 20 more.
Lucas has, however, fallen out of favour under the new coach, Rafael Benitez. The 28-year-old defender has been left out of the Toffees’ last five PL matches. His relationship with Rafael Benitez appears to have reached a point of no return, and a change of scenery could be on the cards.
With Chelsea and Newcastle United showing interest, the French defender does not appear to be short of options. Chelsea were the PL leaders not long ago. Injuries and Covid-19 have since beset them, leading to them dropping valuable points.
One of the positions that are causing the German tactician trouble is left-back. With Chilwell out for the campaign and Alonso struggling to impress, the Blues could be in the market for a reinforcement. The recent injury to James has also further thinned Thomas Tuchel’s options at full-back.
In the Frenchman, the German coach will get an experienced footballer who is already familiar with the demands of English football. With the World Cup coming up, it can be argued that Digne has an incentive to perform in the second half of the campaign. Lucas has won 43 caps for Les Bleus but has not featured regularly for the world champions of late.
