Bayern Munich centre-back David Alaba has confirmed he will be on the move in the summer, with several teams in negotiations with his agent over a potential free transfer. David is among the most decorated footballers in Bavarians history after helping them win nine back-to-back Bundesliga trophies and two UCL titles since breaking into the first-team in 2010.
But Alaba who can operate at left-back, centre-back and in midfield, is keen for a fresh challenge next campaign and has allowed his deal to run down at the Allianz Arena.
Real Madrid have long been linked but Thomas Tuchel is also an admirer and has encouraged Blues to make a move for David as he looks to the transfer market to bolster his defensive options.
However, Chelsea are reluctant to satisfy David’s eye-watering £20m-a-year wage demands and it’s understood Madrid stay clear favourites for the Austrian’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window. Asked about his future at a press conference on Tuesday, David said fans: ‘I have decided to do something new.’
‘It wasn’t an easy decision. I have not yet made the decision on where to go. I have personally decided to see something new, to look for a new challenge. That certainly took its time.’
Alaba added: ‘It’s no secret that my agent is negotiating with other teams. ‘I am looking for a new challenge to develop myself as a person on and off the pitch.’ Bayern confirmed that they had completed a deal for Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano at the weekend and Alaba was full of praise for the French defender.
