Chelsea interested in signing 19-year-old Ligue 1 centre-forward

The London giants have entered the battle to add Hugo Ekitike. The Reims striker is currently one of the most talked-about young centre-forwards in France, with many teams keeping close tabs on his development.

Chelsea have approached Ligue 1 club to explore the possibility of a summer move, with the German coach keen on attacking reinforcements. In addition to Chelsea, Barcelona are another top team interested in acquiring the services of U21 France international in the summer.

The French club, though, are not too keen on offloading their prized asset for cheap and are likely to hold out for a fee of nearly €40m. A product of the Reims academy, Hugo has been one of the rising stars in France in this campaign.

In 18 league games, Ekitikehas racked up eight goals and three assists, meaning he has been involved in 50% of his team’s goals this term. Needless to say, his displays in front of goal have been crucial in helping the French club remain out of the relegation scrap.

The 19-year-old striker was initially courted by Newcastle earlier in the winter transfer window. They were reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign the French striker. And it appears coach Eddie Howe has retained his interest in the footballer despite the recent capture of Chris Wood from Burnley.

Romelu Lukaku’s possible exit should pave the way nicely for the Blues to invest in a young footballer like the Frenchman, who has the potential to become a star footballer in the league.
