The London giants have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig’s in-demand centre-back Dayot Upamecano. The English coach invested heavily in his back-line during the summer with shot-stopper Edouard Mendy, left-back Ben Chilwell and veteran Thiago Silva arriving to bolster a rearguard that shipped 53 goals in the PL last campaign.
All three have been praised for the impact they have made during the early stages of their Chelsea careers, but Frank Lampard stays keen to bolster his central defensive options.
Thiago will turn 37 in September and although he has an option to extend his current deal for a further 12 months, a decision on his future will not be taken until the end of the current season.
Frank Lampard’s remaining defenders, Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, meanwhile, have all been in and out of the side over the course of the former England international’s tenure and none are certain to have long-term futures in Chelsea.
Blues will join the race to sign Dayot come the summer. Upamecano signed a new RB Leipzig deal last year which contains a release clause of around £40m. The likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona also maintain an interest in the Frenchman who helped Leipzig reach the semi-finals of last campaign’s UCL.
Man United, however, are said to have cooled their interest having previously been giving serious consideration to launching a bid back in September. The Norwegian coach is likely to bolster his own back-line in the not too distant future with Marcos Rojo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah set to depart this month.
