Chelsea have joined the race to land Mesut Ozil from Arsenal, according to stories in Germany.
The 29-year-old is yet to secure a new deal with Arsenal and will be available as a free agent at the end of the campaign if he fails to agree a new contract.
Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the Germany international, who has already worked under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
Barcelona have also been linked with Ozil, and stories last week claimed that the player had agreed the terms of a deal with the La Liga leaders.
However, SportBild now claims that Chelsea are a ‘hot candidate’ to land Ozil, who is believed to be keen on staying in the Premier League.
Chelsea were looking to reinforce their midfield options last summer, and while they managed to secure Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, the Premier League champions failed in their effort to sign Ross Barkley from Everton.
Antonio Conte has already expressed his doubts over Chelsea’s squad size and is reportedly targeting two new players ahead of the upcoming window.
Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, caused confusion over Ozil’s future this week by saying that the midfielder will not be sold in January.
The Arsenal head coach had suggested that the club could be open to offers this January, however, on Tuesday, he claimed that Ozil and Alexis Sanchez would be remaining until the end of the campaign.
“They will be here; I do not think every day about that, as long as they are here, they have to give their best to the team and the club. In my head, they stay until the end of the season – that was a decision taken at the start of the season.” – said Wenger.
