Chelsea keen on signing 25-year-old central midfielder

Chelsea are yet to discuss the future of Mateo Kovacic with the midfielder and the Blues have just seven days left to decide whether to keep the Croatian.

The Real Madrid ace joined the Premier League club on a season-long loan last summer and was a regular under Maurizio Sarri.

Despite an impending two-window transfer ban, the Blues have the option of signing Mateo Kovacic as he’s already a registered player at the club. However, the English side must do so by July 1st and they are yet to decide the player’s future.

Chelsea can sign Mateo Kovacic, extend his loan or allow him to return to the Spanish capital. Zinedine Zidane deems the midfielder to be surplus to requirements and has his sights set on Paul Pogba.

But it remains to be seen if Frank Lampard, who is expected to be named Chelsea manager in the coming days, wants to keep the midfielder, who for his part, wants to remain with the club and enjoyed his first year in England.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s absence could convince the Premier League giants to keep Mateo Kovacic, especially given the impending transfer ban.

The 23-year-old sustained an Achilles injury before the Europa League final and is unlikely to feature for the west London side again until November.

Stamford Bridge club face Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the campaign before facing Liverpool in the Super Cup.
