Chelsea will consider bringing Antonio Rudiger back to action from a serious knee injury following Sunday’s opening humiliation against Manchester United.

The Germany international centre-back underwent knee surgery earlier this year that ruled him for half of the last campaign.

Sportsmail believes that Rudiger had pencilled in the clash against Wolves after the forthcoming international break to make his long-awaited return to action.

The ex-Roma defender has stepped up his training regime at the club’s Cobham HQ, however, is understandably keen to make sure his injured knee is 100% ready to make his long-awaited return.

However, the Blues new head-coach Lampard is keeping an even closer eye on German defenders pending return following Sunday’s heavy 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Before the start of the new campaign, Lampard privately stressed to German defender during talks at the club’s training ground about how important he viewed the defender to his plans.

The West London club’s head-coach is understandably eager to have his vital man available as soon as possible as he looks to add solidity to his defence.

French centre-back Kurt Zouma was singled out for criticism following the humiliating defeat to their bitter Premier League rivals Man Utd.

Having returned from an impressive loan spell at Marco Silva’s Everton last campaign, Frenchman will have an important role at Stamford Bridge this campaign, particularly following last week’s exit of David Luiz who has agreed to sign for London rivals Arsenal.

However, Blues legend Gianfranco Zola believed that Zouma will have to fight for his place in Lampard’s starting XI.

Asked if Zouma will drop to the bench when Rudiger becomes available, Zola told beIN Sports: ‘Certainly Rudiger has got more experience. Kurt Zouma fouled Marcus Rashford for Manchester United’s penalty.

‘I think he (Rudiger) has a better understanding with Christensen.

‘I believe if they want to play out from the back, Rudiger and Christensen will be more suitable.’
