Leeds United join race to sign 20-year-old Chelsea youngster

Leeds United are keen on signing Conor Gallagher on a permanent deal, however, Chelsea prefers signing the player to a new deal before sanctioning a loan move. The promoted side West Brom and relegation survivors Aston Villa are interested in a temporary move for U21 England international.

It’s claimed that as Conor’s style of play would fit in with Marcelo Bielsa’s system that the Peacocks are confident that they can recruit the midfielder permanently. Gallagher is highly-rated by the Blues and Frank Lampard, casting doubt that the youngster will leave for good.

The 20-year-old midfielder was one of the Championship’s standout midfielders last campaign, registering six goals and two assists with Charlton before adding another six assists after heading to Swansea in winter.

The English midfielder is versatile in the middle of the park, a major appealing point to the aforementioned clubs eyeing his signature, the footballer can play as an attacking or traditional midfielder.

A loan exit may be best for the England Under-21s international given that first-team football at London club will be hard to come by, especially as Chelsea often only deploy two central midfielders.

Peacocks are said to have tremendous faith in Conor’s skills and believe that he would be a great fit for boss Marcelo Bielsa. But rather than develop him for the London giants by way of a loan, they want to sign him permanently and make him part of their long-term midfield future.

Obviously, Blues rate Conor just as highly, and are in negotiations with Gallagher over a deal extension beyond 2022. The London giants are unlikely to be willing to agree to anything other than a loan, to say the least.
