Liverpool approached Ligue 1 side over transfer of €70m-rated winger

Liverpool Sporting director Michael Edwards personally contacted Lille boss Christophe Galtier to assure him the Reds were not trying to land Nicolas Pepe.

Liverpool were linked to the Ivorian ace in recent weeks, with Jurgen Klopp understood to be a big fan of the striker. But the Reds have moved to dismiss those reports and even told French side there is nothing to the claims.

The Premier League giants have described the claims from France as ‘pure lies’ and insist they have zero interest in signing Pepe.

Lille are believed to be keen on selling Nicolas Pepe, who has netted 37 goals in 79 appearances for the French side.

The Reds believe that their interest in the goalscorer is being used to drive up Nicolas Pepe’s price tag. Only Kylian Mbappe outscored the Ivory Coast international in Ligue 1 last term and Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Manchester United have all shown an interest in the forward.

Liverpool are tipped to have a quiet summer but have been known to spend big when Jurgen Klopp’s priority targets become available.

The European champions are due to return to pre-season in the next week, but Alisson, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita are set to return late to training.

The Egypt international, Senegalese striker and former RB Leipzig midfielder are competing in the Africa Cup of Nations, while Brazilian duo Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino are also on international duty in the Copa America.
