The Merseyside giants are among teams keeping tabs on Youri Tielemans, although Leicester City are determined to keep hold of the star midfielder. The German tactician has already hinted at a busy transfer window for Liverpool in the aftermath of a brutal injury crisis during the 2020/21 season.
While the Merseyside giants’ need for footballers in the defensive department has already been well documented, they could require further options in midfield as well, especially with Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
The Dutchman, in fact, has been linked with a move to Barcelona for a free transfer, while Naby Keita has had his problems with injuries. It leaves Jurgen Klopp a bit shallow in terms of his midfield options, especially if Fabinho does continue as a centre-back from next campaign. And that is where someone like Youri could have been useful.
Since joining the PL in 2019, Tielemans has already showcased what he is capable of. And under the leadership of ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, the midfielder has become an indispensable figure at the base of Leicester’s formation, forming an excellent partnership alongside Nampalys Mendy.
Belgium international’s ability to march forward with the ball, combined with his urgency, aggression and long-range shooting prowess would have made him an upgrade over Wijnaldum an Anfield. And at the age of just 23, Youri could have indeed been a smart long-term investment for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp, though, could look at other available alternatives this summer, including Florian Neuhaus, whose more creative-oriented style of play could offer a new dimension to the club’s attacking approach. The German may cost a fortune, however, with Borussia Dortmund also reportedly interested in his services.
