Steve McManaman reckons Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has many friends in the Bundesliga who can help seal a deal for Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz. The Merseyside Reds have been massively linked with making a move for the playmaker in recent windows.
Jurgen Klopp needs to add attacking reinforcements to his squad this summer as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will miss significant periods of next season due to the Olympic Games and Africa Cup of Nations overlapping the regular Premier League campaign.
Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner are just two of the high-profile stars linked with a transfer to Anfield.
But those who are often discussed regarding a transfer to Liverpool rarely materialise.
Instead, Jurgen Klopp prefers to keep his business behind closed doors, and McManaman believes that could see a swoop for Kai Havertz, who has made over 100 matches in the German top-flight.
“He’s a young player, and he’s doing really well at Bayer Leverkusen, so we will wait and see,” McManaman wrote in his HorseRacing.net column.
“It’s one of those transfers where there’s a young player with plenty to improve on, who might be the type of player that Liverpool are looking at rather than a fully fledged superstar.
“He is one who’s impressed in the Bundesliga this season, and Jurgen Klopp certainly knows the Bundesliga, and he has a lot of friends in that league, so he’s got a lot of people to call to get opinions on players.
“Normally Liverpool do a lot of their transfer business very secretly don’t they?
“When they’ve brought in players previously, we’ve hardly known about them and they’ve not been confirmed transfer targets for while, with Virgil Van Dijk being the exception.
