Liverpool eyeing shock summer move for Zenit St. Petersburg forward

Merseyside club have been scouting Zenit Saint Petersburg centre-forward Sardar Azmoun, and Iran international impressive form has amazed the onlookers. Azmoun joined the Lions from Rubin Kazan on 1 February this year and has been finding the back of the net regularly ever since.

Sardar has scored 14 goals in 17 games across all tournaments since his arrival, including two in the Russian Super Cup, which Reds scouts were in attendance for. Lions went on to lose 3-2 to Lokomotiv Moscow, but the brace from the Iranian striker appeared to confirm to the visitors from Liverpool that he is the bright talent they thought he was.

Merseyside club were first linked with the 24-year-old striker back in the winter transfer window of 2017, but he was not interested in the switch due to a likely lack of game time. Sardar attracted a lot of interest in 2017, with Celtic Everton, Lazio and Valencia all reportedly keen on sign him.

Now in the best form of his career, the man dubbed the ‘Iranian Ibrahimovic’ will be attracting several suitors again this transfer window, having also starred for his country at the Asian Cup in winter, scoring four goals. Daniel Sturridge left Liverpool, while the future of Origi is uncertain, so Liverpool are in the market for a replacement.

Azmoun has contracted with the Russian club until 2022, and his release clause is around €20m. Merseyside club also linked with Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio, Ajax winger David Neres, Lyon attacker Nabil Fekir and Leicester City playmaker James Maddison.
