Liverpool have given up on their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Pablo Gavira and are now negotiating a deal with Leeds United for Kalvin Phillips. Gavi is already a crucial figure for the Blaugrana but lengthy negotiations over a new deal at the Catalan giants had offered the Reds hope of snatching one of European football’s brightest prospects.
His current contract expires in 2023, with Liverpool prepared to activate his £40m release clause to bring him to the Merseyside club. The Reds have dropped their interest having learned Gavi intends to sign a new contract, which will include a huge bump in his salary and a $1b release clause.
The Blaugrana are expected to confirm Gavi’s new contract this week, with the Reds now considering the ‘case closed’. The report adds the Reds have swiftly moved on and are already negotiating a deal to sign Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.
England international has two years left on his current deal at Elland Road but could move on this summer. Man United are huge admirers of Kalvin, but the bitter rivalry between the two teams means a deal is unlikely.
Phillips has reportedly made it clear to those close to him that there is no way he could swap Leeds United for the red half of Manchester and fears such a move would tarnish his reputation with Leeds supporters. But Man City now appear to face stiff competition from the Reds for the English midfielder’s signature.
