The Merseyside giants are reportedly keen on luring Sporting Lisbon defender Nuno Mendes away from Liga NOS. However, Liverpool are likely to back away from any proposed deal if the Liga NOS giants successfully renegotiate a higher minimum release clause in U21 Portugal international’s contract.
Nuno has spent his entire playing career with Sporting Lisbon and has already played 19 matches in all tournaments for the Liga NOS giants senior first-team. Mendes who operates primarily as a left-back but can fill in as a centre-back has quickly emerged as one of Europe’s brightest talents.
The 18-year-old player’s hugely successful breakthrough has caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest teams, including current English champions, Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp is keen to lure the highly-rated youngster away from the Estádio José Alvalade.
The Portuguese defender’s current deal which is ready to run until 2025 contains a £40m minimum release clause which the Lions are reportedly eager to increase in an attempt to fend off possible suitors. It is understood that the interest being shown in the teenager is causing him to delay entering new deal negotiations.
Despite Reds admiration for Nuno, no official negotiations have yet began between Liverpool and the player’s agent, however, the Merseyside giants were hopeful to kick-start things by the end of the year.
However, it has also been claimed that should the Liga NOS giants successfully increase their defender’s minimum release clause above the £40m it currently stands at, then the Reds will back-away from any agreement.
