According to The Mirror, Southampton have identified Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw as a possible target for the January transfer window.
The England defender has left St Mary’s for Old Trafford back in 2014, but a broken leg and falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho has restricted the 22-year-old to just 49 appearances in all competitions.
As per the same sources, the potential sale of Ryan Bertrand to Man City could lead to a reunion between Southampton and Luke Shaw at the start of 2018.
The 27-year-old Bertrand still has three-and-half years remaining on his contract, but it is believed that the Saints may be prepared to sell should they receive an acceptable offer.
Any deal would pave the way for Shaw to return to the south coast, where he made 67 appearances in all competitions before United paid £27m for his signature.
The England international has only featured in the EFL Cup this season.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid sensation Marco Asensio could be tempted by a move to Manchester United at the end of the campaign.
The 21-year-old rising superstar is believed to have attracted interest from a number of other top European clubs, including the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.
Jose Mourinho’s side are considering a £70m offer, which would be enough to trigger the Spaniard’s release clause, and it will then be down to the player to decide whether to stay or leave.
