Man United closely monitoring 26-year-old Germany international

Man United have submitted a deal proposal to Leon Goretzka in the hope that the player will agree to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

The 26-year-old midfielder is entering the final year of his deal at the Allianz Arena and the Red Devils have been alerted to his availability after little progress was made in negotiations with the Bavarians over an extension.

Leon joined the Bavarians on a free transfer from Schalke in 2018, meaning the midfielder has previous in moving on a free transfer at the end of his deal.

The Norwegian boss is keen to bolster his midfield, particularly as it appears likely that Paul Pogba will leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer. Red Devils have therefore submitted a contract proposal to Leon in a bid to persuade him to call off negotiations with Bayern and to move to Man United in 12 months’ time.

Bundesliga giants are desperate to keep Germany international, with Julian Nagelsmann confirming during his first press conference as a coach that he wants the midfielder to remain at the Allianz Arena. ‘Leon is an important player for us. I would be happy to work with him for many years,’ Nagelsmann said.

‘I think very highly of him. He is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world. Everyone likes to have him in their team.’ The Red Devils have already splashed out £73m this summer on Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho, with the club expected to confirm the transfer this week.
