According to the reports, Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Real Madrid versatile midfielder Mateo Kovacic as the Red Devils look to replace retiring Michael Carrick.
The 36-year-old Carrick is set to retire at the end of the campaign and will join Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff after 12 trophy-laden years at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese manager confirmed last month that he will sign at least one midfielder during the summer and could be forced into signing a second should Marouane Fellaini decide not to renew his current deal.
Spanish publication AS claims that Man United have looked at the likes of Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri and Lazio star Sergej Milinković-Savić but the Old Trafford side have been alerted to Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic.
The Croatia international has failed to tie down a first-team spot at the Santiago Bernabeu since joining Madrid from Inter Milan back in 2015. The 23-year-old is stuck behind Casemiro in the pecking order and Man United could offer him the chance of regular first-team football at Old Trafford.
Los Blancos are understood to be keen on keeping Kovacic but the Red Devils face competition from the likes of Juventus and former club Inter Milan if the midfielder comes on the market.
