Man United held negotiations with 21-year-old Argentina international

Man United are set to pay up to €20m in order to add Julian Alvarez from River Plate in the winter transfer window. Argentina international signed for the River Plate youth setup in the summer of 2015 and rose through the sides to break into the senior team in 2018, at the age of 18.

Since then, Alvarez has gradually grown into a regular in the lineup under Gallardo, producing a return of 36 goals and 25 assists from 96 games in all tournaments thus far. Julian, in particular, enjoyed a stunning 2021 season, bagging 24 goals and 15 assists from 46 games across all tournaments.

The 21-year-old striker finished as the top scorer in the Argentine top flight with a tally of 18 strikes from 21 matches. His growth and achievements have put him on the radars of elite teams in Europe, who are lining up to add the Argentine centre-forward in winter.

The Red Devils are among the clubs interested in luring the South American striker away from River Plate in the upcoming window. Man United strengthened their front-line in the summer with the signing of Ronaldo and Sancho. However, reinforcements could be needed ahead of the second half of the season.

The Argentine, to that end, would be a viable target for Man United, considering his rich vein of form, young age and limitless potential. Recent reports had indicated that the Red Devils already made an offer for Alvarez, but those claims seem to be wide off the mark.
