Man United in pole position to sign 20-year-old Eredivisie defender

Man United have kick-started their attempts to add Jurrien Timber. The Red Devils have initiated discussions with Ajax surrounding the transfer of their prized defensive asset, with the footballer himself keen on moving to Theatre of Dreams in the summer.

Erik ten Hag wants to make the Netherlands international his first signing as the Red Devils manager. The Dutch tactician rates Timber highly after giving him his professional breakthrough at Ajax and playing a crucial role in his rapid rise to prominence over the past couple of years.

Erik ten Hag has identified several weak points for Man United ahead of the new campaign. One of them is the central defensive unit, especially with club captain Maguire struggling for form. The other alternative Lindelof has not had a great time either, while Bailly and Jones could soon leave the club in the summer.

It effectively leaves Man United with Varane as the only reliable defensive option. The French centre-back himself, though, is far from dependable due to his poor record with injuries. And with that in mind, Erik ten Hag is ready to bring in a quality defender this summer.

But one would expect the Red Devils coach to favour a move for Jurrien. The Dutch defender’s athleticism, pace and ability to operate as a fullback could prove to be invaluable for the Red Devils in the new campaign. Luring him from Ajax, though, could be a difficult ask despite Erik ten Hag’s strong rapport with the footballer.
