Man United in the battle to sign 23-year-old Serie A centre-back

Man United and Man City could reportedly be set for a transfer war to sign Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic in the summer. Serbia international has been with the Serie A outfit since 2017 and has gradually grown into one of the most talented young defenders in the Italian top-flight, already racking up 119 matches.

Nikola has missed only a couple of Serie A games this campaign, contributing with a couple of goals and an assist in 20 league matches. Milenkovic, however, is ready to enter the final year of his deal with the La Viola at the end of the campaign and has no intentions of penning an extension.

As a result, the Italian club are set to cash in on him in the summer transfer window, with the 23-year-old defender likely to be available for a fee of nearly £30m. The Serbian centre-back’s potential availability in the summer has put several teams on high-alert, including Red Devils.

The Norwegian manager wanted to bolster his back-line in the last summer window as per the report, but instead recruited footballers in other positions. However, Victor Lindelof has come up a short time and again while Eric Bailly continues to be plagued with fitness issues whereas Harry Maguire has also not always been consistent.

And, having seen his suspect defence hurt a possible title challenge, Ole is set to bolster his defensive unit next summer, with Nikola emerging as a target. The fact that he can play at right-back as well is likely to appeal to Man United given that they are lacking cover for first-choice option Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
