Man United join race to sign 25-year-old Switzerland international

Man United and Liverpool are among the teams embroiled in a transfer tussle for the signature of Denis Zakaria. Man United are set to make the first move, with a deal offer worth €10m per year prepared for the Borussia Monchengladbach player.

After choosing to run down his deal with the Bundesliga giants, Switzerland international will end a half-a-decade-long stint with the club in the summer transfer window. Signed from Young Boys in summer 2017, Zakaria has progressed significantly in the last five years, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Germany.

During his productive five-year spell with the Bundesliga giants, Denis has played 144 games, superbly overcoming a long-term knee injury to find stability in his game again. The 25-year-old midfielder is now ready for a new phase in his career.

And several teams, including Man United and Liverpool, are vying for his signature due to his impending status as a free agent. Man United and Liverpool have already submitted their enquiries to the Swiss midfielder as they look to secure his services on a Bosman move in the summer.

Man United, in particular, could do with a footballer of the former Young Boys footballer’s qualities, with signing a defensive midfielder a necessity for them.

With Matic approaching the end of his illustrious career, Man United have a shortage of a defensive midfielder. Neither McTominay nor Fred is a defensive midfielder, with the two footballers better utilised as a box-to-box midfielder.
