Man United have taken the lead in pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, who is also a transfer target for Liverpool and Barcelona. Spain international has been a regular in the first-team since 2014, becoming a crucial figure under the Argentine manager.
However, Niguez found his role reduced in the most recent season, and Los Colchoneros are now pushing to cash in on him this summer as they wish to strengthen their squad with new faces. Saul’s situation has alerted a host of top teams around Europe, with the likes of Liverpool, Barca and Man United all interested in signing him this summer.
Blaugrana are in the market for a new midfielder this summer and had been pushing to sign Gini Wijnaldum for the longest time, only to see him join PSG. With Pjanic headed for the exit doors and Moriba’s future also in question due to the contract standoff, the Catalan club could certainly do with a midfielder, making Niguez a viable target.
Man United’s need for a new central midfielder stems from the uncertain future surrounding midfielder Paul Pogba. France international is in the final year of his deal with the Red Devils, but there hasn’t been much progress made in the way of an extension.
Furthermore, Donny van de Beek could also be on his way out, with Barcelona being interested in the Dutch player. Should either or both end up leaving Old Trafford this summer, Man United will need to bring in a replacement, making the Spanish midfielder an option worth considering.
