Man United renewed talks with 23-year-old Bundesliga defender

Man United have joined the race to add Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano in the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old centre-back is also said to be on the transfer wishlist of Chelsea, who are desperately looking for central defensive additions.

Dayot joined the Bavarians from fellow RB Leipzig last year in a deal worth nearly €40m. Upamecano was drafted into the starting lineup by coach Julian Nagelsmann straight away as the centre-back started 25 Bundesliga games.

However, the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus has put a question mark on France international’s future at Allianz Arena. With 2022 being a World Cup year, the French centre-back would be eager to play as a regular starter to stay in the battle for a spot in Deschamps’s France squad for the upcoming competitions.

Man United entered the summer transfer window with a defender high on their priority list. But the Red Devils have already signed a centre-back in Lisandro Martinez, who has joined them from Ajax. Argentina international played under Erik ten Hag at the Dutch giants and was also named their Player of the Year last campaign.

But after signing Lisandro Martinez, the Red Devils do not really need to secure the services of another centre-back despite uncertainties surrounding the futures of Bailly and Tuanzebe. Chelsea might thus have the edge over Man United in the battle to add the Frenchman.
