Newcastle United have been offered the opportunity to add Man United centre-back Eric Bailly. The 28-year-old centre-back is looking for greener pastures after seeing his playing time reduce drastically due to form and injuries. Eric moved to Man United in 2016 from Villarreal but could not cement a spot in the Red Devils’ defence.
Bailly has often been injured and also has not made the most of the chances offered to him. In six campaigns, Ivory Coast international has played 113 games for the Red Devils, 38 of which came in his debut campaign for Man United.
Varane’s arrival last campaign and Man United’s search for a new centre-back, which if materialises, will further limit the Ivorian centre-back’s playing time, and the club are thus ready to offload him this summer. In the recently-concluded season, the Ivorian played only seven games across tournaments for Man United.
The African centre-back is naturally looking for a club where he would play more regularly, and Newcastle have emerged as an option. The Magpies are targeting a defender signing this summer, and Lille centre-back Sven Botman is on top of their list. However, their pursuit of Sven Botman is not going as planned.
Newcastle United were hopeful of signing the former Villarreal defender for £30m and believed they had a deal in place with Lille. But the Ligue 1 club increased their demand to £36m, which has stalled the transfer. Newcastle United are even set to drop their pursuit, should the 2020/21 French champions fail to lower their asking price.
