AS Roma have held negotiations with Manchester United board about the prospect of taking Chile international Alexis Sanchez on loan next campaign, as coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signalled his faith in Anthony Martial as a striker by handing the France star the No 9 shirt for this campaign.
Ole expressed confidence the last week that United won’t struggle for goals, despite the departure of Belgium international Romelu Lukaku for Inter Milan.
But Alexis’ role in the attack remains unresolved with just over three weeks until the close of the Italian, French, Spanish and German transfer windows on September 2.
Ole said that he expects Alexis to stay with United this campaign, but AS Roma are thought to have been handed the opportunity to take the technically gifted forward on a season-long loan.
It is unclear if the South American would be open to the transfer, but any loan arrangement would likely involve the Red Devils having to subsidise a substantial part of his £391,000 per week wages, which increase to around £500,000 per week with bonuses.
Sanchez returned to Manchester United only the previous week after an extended holiday following his involvement with his country in the Copa America.
He has played just 65 minutes in pre-season for his side in a behind-closed-doors friendly versus Blackburn Rovers Under-23s.
Meantime, Manchester United have had a €25 million bid for Dinamo Zagreb’s attacking midfielder Dani Olmo rejected.
According to the latest reports in Croatia from Sportske Novosti, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was interested in bringing the 21-year old to Old Trafford and the club failed in a deadline day offer for him.
